MEP Systems: The Hidden Giants of Embodied Carbon in Construction

A recent webinar shed light on the critical role of MEP systems in embodied carbon emissions. They revealed that MEP systems account for up to 25% of embodied carbon in new buildings and as much as 75% in retrofits, driven by frequent equipment replacements, refrigerant leakages, and oversized designs.
This highlights the urgent need to address embodied carbon to achieve true sustainability in construction. The discussion emphasised practical solutions like optimising system design, adopting low-carbon refrigerants, and considering lifecycle impacts when selecting materials.
By integrating passive strategies, such as natural ventilation and shading, we can further reduce MEP carbon emissions.
At ALEMCO, we are inspired by these insights and remain committed to implementing sustainable practices that transform our industry and support a low-carbon future.
